A dimple (30) for use on a heat transfer surface (20) exposed to a flowing gas, for use for example in a gas turbine engine (10), the dimple (30) having an aspherical shape. The dimple (30) may also be shaped as a segment of a torus, a double wedge, and have a flat bottom surface. The ratio of the dimple maximum depth to maximum diameter is less than 0.2 and may be equal to 0.1.
