The present invention provides a method for determining the predisposition of pigs to boar taint. Boar taint is a strong unpleasant odour given off upon heating or cooking of meat from uncastrated male pigs. Boar taint is associated with elevated levels of skatole, indole and androstenone. There are significant economic losses attributable to current methods of preventing or producing the effect of boar taint. Thus, the identification of animals of the desired genotype allows for the selection against animals with a genetic predisposition to boar taint, this being an attractive, cost effective and humane solution to the boar taint problem. The present invention thus identifies QTL for boar taint and its component traits. In particular said traits are shown to be particularly located on chromosome 6 and 14, and further an important candidate gene mapping to chromosome 14 is also shown.
L'invention concerne une méthode permettant de déterminer la prédisposition des porcs à développer une odeur sexuelle, cette odeur sexuelle étant une odeur forte désagréable émise lors du chauffage ou de la cuisson de la viande provenant de porcs mâles non castrés. Cette odeur est associée à des niveaux élevés de scatole, d'indole et d'androsténone. Des pertes économiques significatives peuvent être attribuées aux méthodes actuelles de prévention et de traitement de l'effet de l'odeur sexuelle. L'identification d'animaux d'un génotype désiré permet donc la sélection d'animaux présentant une prédisposition génétique à l'odeur sexuelle, ce qui est une solution attractive, peu coûteuse et humaine au problème de l'odeur sexuelle. L'invention permet donc d'identifier les loci de caractère quantitatif de l'odeur sexuelle et les caractéristiques des composants. Lesdites caractéristiques sont, en particulier, présentes sur un chromosome 6 et 14, et ce chromosome 14 peut être mis en correspondance avec un gène candidat important.
