Vigour of various types of seed is determined by measuring volatile gases emitted from the seed when exposed to various conditions. For example, ethanol produced by canola (Brassica napus) seed in an enclosed container stored for 24 hours at room temperature after the seed has been made up to 20 % moisture is measured by gas chromatography or by colour change in an indicator substance. The quantity of ethanol determined by either method of analysis indicates the vigour of the seed.
