ABSTRACT Primary amines are assayed by providing a substituted or unsubstituted naphthalene-2,3-dicarboxyaldehyde reac- tive with primary amines, reacting the substituted or unsubstituted naphthalene-2,3-dicarboxyaldehyde with at least one primary amine analyte and cyanide ion to form an adduct amenable to fluorometric or electrochemichal assaying techniques and fluorometrically or electroche- mically assaying said adduct. The method according to the invention enables assaying of trace concentrations of analytes containing one or more primary amino groups.
