This invention provides novel methods for assessing HPV infection. Gene expression levels are used to the progression of HPV infection from benign to malignant growth by determining the ratio between mRNA levels of E6 and/or E7 and E2 and/or L1. Also provided are kits for carrying out the methods of this invention.
