An assessment of sleep quality and sleep disordered breathing is determined from the cardiopulmonary coupling between two physiological data series. In an embodiment, an R-R interval series is derived from an electrocardiogram (ECG) signal. The normal beats from the R-R interval series are extracted to produce a normal-to-normal (NN) interval series. The amplitude variations in the QRS complex are used to extract to a surrogate respiration signal (i.e., ECG- derived respiration (EDR)) that is associated with the NN interval series. The two series are corrected to remove outliers, and resampled. The cross-spectral power and coherence of the two resampled signals are calculated over a plurality of coherence windows. For each coherence window, the product of the coherence and cross-spectral power is used to calculate coherent cross power. Using the appropriate thresholds for the coherent cross power, the proportion of sleep spent in CAP, non-CAP, and wake and/or REM are determined.

L'invention concerne l'évaluation de qualité de sommeil et de respiration de sommeil perturbé a base de couplage cardio-pulmonaire entre deux séries de données physiologiques. Selon une variante, on dérive une série d'intervalles R-R d'un signal d'électrocardiogramme (ECG). On extrait les pulsations normales de cette série pour produire une série d'intervalles normal-normal (NN). Les variations d'amplitude dans le complexe QRS permettent d'extraire un signal de respiration de substitution (à savoir, respiration dérivée de l'ECG (EDR)) associé à la série d'intervalles NN. Les deux séries sont corrigées pour l'élimination d'aberrations, et rééchantillonnées. La puissance interspectrale et la cohérence des deux signaux rééchantillonnés sont calculées sur plusieurs fenêtres de cohérence. Pour chaque fenêtre, le produit de la cohérence et de la puissance interspectrale permet de calculer la puissance interspectrale cohérente. Des seuils appropriés pour la puissance interspectrale permettent de déterminer la proportion de sommeil en alternatif cyclique (CAP), non CAP, et éveil et/ou mouvement rapide des yeux (REM).
