In an asymmetric umbrella a shaft is eccentrically disposed underneath a canopy, with a runner slidably mounted thereon. A plurality of rib assemblies form a canopy supporting frame and are coupled to the shaft's apex and the canopy. The plurality of rib assemblies comprise short and long main rib assemblies having a deployment arm coupled to the runner, a proximal rib, a hinge joint, and at least one distal rib; with the proximal rib additionally coupled to the apex and the hinge joint. The long main rib assembly having first and second distal ribs both coupled to a connecting arm of the long main rib assembly. The first distal rib is additionally coupled to the hinge joint and deployment arm. When the canopy is collapsed the plurality of rib assemblies are the same length and the free ends point in the same direction. The short and long main rib assembly deployment arms are of equal length.
