ASYNCHRONOUS OPERATION OF CYCLOCONVERTER WITH IMPROVED VOLTAGE GAIN BY EMPLOYING A SCALAR CONTROL ALGORITHM ABSTRACT This proposes a direct frequency changer made of a matrix of bidirectional switches which interconnect a three phase input AC input voltage system to a polyphase output voltage system in which the conduction periods of each switch are governed by a scalar control method. The method uses the instantaneous voltage ratio of specific input phase voltages to the switches to generate the active and zero states of said switches. A voltage transfert ratio as high as 0.87 is attainable under synchronous and asynchronous operation with conventionally connected three phase load. Moreover, the converter operation can be set to produce almost any power displacement factor, as seen from the input, independently of load power factor. Finally, the method allows using simple analogue and digital 'techniques to implement the matrix controller as no complex equations have to be solved on line. - 1 -
