ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A DNA segment having a sequence encoding a protein associated with attaching and effacing activity of enterohemorrhagic E.coli, or an oligonucleotide fragment thereof is provided. The DNA segment permits selection of DNA and amino acid sequences unique to a protein associated with attaching and effacing activity of enterohemorrhagic E.coli. Novel DNA segments or proteins can thus be constructed which contain the unique DNA and amino acid sequences. The DNA segments or oligonucleotide fragments thereof may be use to detect the presence of a DNA segment having a sequence encoding a protein associated with attaching and effacing activity of enterohemorrhagic E.coli. Selected DNA segments or oligonucleotide fragments thereof may be used in methods for detecting pathogenic verotoxin-producing E.coli.
