An attachment (22, 24, 25, 26, 26", 26"'), adapted to mount to the front edge (13) of an excavating bucket (10), includes a working structure and a base. The front edge (13) of the bucket (10) defines an inner surface (42), an outer surface (40), and a beveled surface (44) oriented at an inclination (44a, 44b, 44c) to the inner (40) and outer (42) surfaces. The base of the attachment (22, 24, 25, 26, 26", 26"') includes a single leg (37) or a pair of legs (34, 36;34', 36'; 34", 36") having opposed engagement surfaces (56 and 57, 58). The engagement surfaces (56 and 57, 58) on the two legged attachments (34, 36; 34', 36'; 34", 36") diverge from one another to define a gap (38) therebetween for receiving the lip (12) of the buck (10). One of the engagement surfaces (58) defines a convex surface (62, R) which enables the attachment (22, 24, 25, 26, 26", 26"') to be mounted to a variety of different buckets irrespective of the inclination (44a, 44b, 44c) of the beveled surface (44) of the front edge (13).
