A method for providing authenticatable user approval of a privacy statement includes receiving a request for user acceptance of a privacy policy, and providing as a response, a digitally signed copy of the privacy policy as well as a chain of digital delegations starting from a common trusted entity asserting that the digital signature applied to the privacy policy belongs to an entity authoritative for the user. A method for requesting such a signed policy includes receiving a signed privacy policy in response to requesting one, and verifying that the entity signing the policy is authoritative to sign on behalf of the user.
