An auger bit for forming bores having a circular cross section in a work piece is disclosed. The bit has an elongate auger portion, a shank, a lead screw, a chisel edge blade, a spur blade, and a shearing blade. The elongate auger portion has an elongate shaft with a elongate helical land formed therein defining a flute between adjacent turns on the elongate helical land. The shank is integrally connected to one end of the elongate auger portion and is adapted to engage a drill. The lead screw is integrally connected to the other end of the elongate auger portion and is for engaging the work piece. The chisel edge blade extends outwardly from the leading edge of the elongate helical land and is for chipping material from the work piece. The spur blade extends longitudinally from the elongate helical land in the direction of the lead screw. The shearing blade extends longitudinally between adjacent turns on the elongate helical land. Alternatively the shearing blade partially extends longitudinally between adjacent turns on the elongate helical land. Preferably the shearing blade, the chisel edge blade and the spur blade are removable.

La mèche comporte une partie tarière, une queue, une pointe de centrage, une arête transversale, une lame droite et une lame de cisaillement. La partie tarière possède une longue tige dotée d'une longue lèvre hélicoïdale définissant une goujure entre les tours de spires adjacentes. La queue fait partie intégrante de la mèche et est destinée à être insérée dans le mandrin de la perceuse. La pointe de centrage fait partie intégrante de l'autre extrémité de la mèche et sert à centrer l'outil dans la pièce usinée. L'arête transversale se prolonge vers l'extérieur du bord d'attaque de la lèvre hélicoïdale et sert à rogner la matière de la pièce usinée. La lame droite est un prolongement longitudinal de la tige en direction de la pointe de centrage. La lame de cisaillement se prolonge dans l'axe longitudinal de l'outil entre tours de spires adjacentes sur la lèvre hélicoïdale. La lame de cisaillement peut aussi n'être qu'un prolongement partiel de l'axe longitudinal de l'outil entre tours de spires adjacentes sur la lèvre hélicoïdale. De préférence, la lame de cisaillement, l'arête transversale et la lame droite sont amovibles.
