An auger (34) for vertical mixers includes a forward angled leading edge (42). The leading edge (42) includes an inner portion (52), which may or may not be aligned with a radial line (56) extending from the axis of rotation (37) of the auger. The leading edge also includes an outer portion (54) adjacent to the inner portion (52), which is angled forward of the radial line (56) and extends forward of the inner portion (62).
