There is described a method for checking the authenticity of security documents, in particular banknotes, wherein authentic security documents comprise security features (41-49; 30; 10; 51, 52) printed, applied or otherwise provided on the security documents, which security features comprise characteristic visual features intrinsic to the processes used for producing the security documents. The method comprises the steps of (i) acquiring a sample image (c0) of at least one region of interest (R.o.l.) of the surface of a candidate document to be authenticated, which region of interest encompasses at least part of the security features, (ii) digitally processing the sample image (c0) by performing a decomposition of the sample image (c0) into at least one scale sub-space containing high resolution details (d1 1, d1 2, d1 3,...) of the sample image (c0) and extracting classifying features (.sigma.2, C,...) from the scale sub-space, and (iii) deriving an authenticity rating of the candidate document based on the extracted classifying features (.sigma.2, C,...).
L'invention décrit un procédé pour vérifier l'authenticité de documents de sécurité, en particulier des billets de banque, les documents de sécurité authentiques comprenant des éléments de sécurité (41-49; 30; 10; 51, 52) imprimés, appliqués ou autrement fournis sur les documents de sécurité, lesquels éléments de sécurité comprennent des éléments visuels caractéristiques intrinsèques aux procédures utilisées pour produire les éléments de sécurité. Le procédé comprend les étapes consistant à : (i) acquérir une image d'échantillon (C°) d'au moins une région d'intérêt (R.o.l.) de la surface d'un document candidat à authentifier, laquelle région d'intérêt englobe au moins une partie des éléments de sécurité, (ii) traiter numériquement l'image d'échantillon (C°) par exécution d'une décomposition de l'image d'échantillon (C°) en au moins un sous-espace d'échelle contenant des détails à haute résolution (d11, d12, d13,...) de l'image d'échantillon (C°) et extraction d'éléments de classification (.sigma.2, C,...) à partir du sous-espace d'échelle, et (iii) obtenir une évaluation d'authenticité du document candidat sur la base des éléments de classification extraits (.sigma.2, C,...).
