A dual-secure authentication technique takes advantage of the inherently secure nature of certain data storage media, such as that based upon the structural variation, from place to place over a strip, of magnetic characteristic, to attach to a valued article a secure identity code. The security is further enhanced by incorporating that code, together with further data, "signing" the code and further data using the secret key of a cryptosystem pair and attaching the signed information to the article. Authentication requires the signed information to be de-crypted using the public key of the cryptosystem pair and ensuring that the code so recovered tallies with that recorded in the secure medium.

Cette technique d'authentification à double protection permet de tirer parti de la nature protégée en elle-même de certains milieux de stockage de données, tels que ceux basés sur la variation structurelle, d'un point à un autre d'une bande, des caractéristiques magnétiques de celle-ci, afin d'attacher à un article de valeur un code d'identité protégé. On accroît encore la sécurité en incorporant à ce code d'autres données, "signant" ainsi ce code et les autes données à l'aide d'une clé secrète d'une paire de clés d'un système cryptographique et attachant les informations signées à l'article. Le processus d'authentification nécessite le décryptage des informations signées à l'aide de la clé publique de la paire de clés du système cryptographique ainsi que la vérification que le code ainsi récupéré recoupe bien celui enregistré dans le milieu protégé.
