A system, apparatus and method for three-dimensional scanning and digitization of the surface geometry of objects are claimed. The system comprises a hand- held apparatus that is auto-referenced. The system is auto-referenced since it does not need any positioning device to provide the 6 degree of freedom transformations that are necessary to integrate 3D measurements in a global coordinate system while the apparatus is manipulated to scan the surface. The system continuously calculates its own position and orientation from observation while scanning the surface geometry of an object. To do so, the system exploits a triangulation principle and integrates an apparatus that captures both surface points originating from the reflection of a projected laser pattern on an object's surface and 2D positioning features originating from the observation of target positioning features. Using the described system, it is possible to simultaneously build and match a 3D representation of the positioning features while accumulating the 3D surface points describing the surface geometry.

La présente invention concerne un système, un appareil, et un procédé de lecture optique 3D et de numérisation de la géométrie des surfaces des objets. Ce système comprend une douchette optique autoréférencée. Il n'y a besoin d'aucun dispositif de positionnement pour les transformations à 6 degrés de liberté nécessaires à l'intégration des mesures 3D dans un système global de coordonnées pendant le maniement de la douchette sur la surface. Le système calcule en continu sa position et l'orientation à partir des observations par balayage optique de la géométrie des surfaces des objets. A cet effet, le système qui utilise un principe de triangulation, comporte un appareil capturant, d'une part les points de surface provenant de la réflexion d'un tracé laser projeté sur une surface de l'objet, et d'autre part des dispositifs de positionnement 2D provenant de l'observation de dispositifs de positionnement à cible. Le système de l'invention permet ainsi de construire et comparer une représentation 3D des dispositifs de positionnement, tout en faisant le cumul des points de surface 3D décrivant la géométrie des surfaces.
