ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An automatic safety device having a cable passing through it for stopping a load in the event of a breakdown of a motor drive and/or manual hoist and/or pulling system. The device comprises an automatic cable clamping mechanism having a self-tightening jaw block with two jaws which are constantly urged by a pair of spring driven levers to clamp the cable. An automatic motor stopping device is also provided and having a circuit breaker coupled with the cable clamping mechanism in such a way that, while the jaw block is not prevented from clamping the cable, the circuit breaker interrupts the motor feed. An engaging device is adapted to prevent working of the cable clamping mechanism and the motor stopping device as long as the relative speed of the safety apparatus and of the cable is lower than a pre-established critical speed. An automatic releasing device is actuated by the centrifugal force developing in an inertia block rotated by a driving wheel of a driving device whereby the driving wheel directly or indirectly receives itself a rotary motion from the cable, and which is adapted to neutralize the action of the engaging device as soon as the relative speed of the cable and of the safety apparatus attains the critical speed. A manual releasing device is adapted to neutralize the action of the engaging device independently from the relative speed of the cable and of the safety apparatus. The safety device is characterized in that the flanges to which the self-tightening block is linked through its jaw actuating levers are connected with the load directly and/or by means of a case of a hoisting and/or pulling apparatus so that the safety apparatus is adapted to work in order to stop the load either, by a breaking of the cable of the hoisting and/or pulling ap- paratus, on an auxiliary cable, or, by attaining the crticial speed, as well on the cable of the hoisting and/or pulling apparatus as on an auxiliary cable.
