An automatic bar feeder for automatic multispindle lathes comprises a revolving drum (12) supporting guides (15) for the running of bars to take them in succession into positions of advancement and machining in a lathe. The guides (15) are equipped with a running bar pusher (17) powered with a hydraulic motor (18) for running of the bars therein. The feeder (10) comprises a first sensor unit (21) which emits signals which are a function of the position of an advancing bar. The signal is received by a control device (23) which commands a proportional flow rate valve (24) for fluid feed to the hydraulic motor to control the movement of the bar by feedback.
