This invention is an automatic biopsy device (10) for taking plural samples of tissue of a patient. The device is pneumatically operated in response to an actuator (20) activated by the operator and makes use of a removable cassette in which a plurality of stylets (22) are located. The stylets (22) are disposed on a moveable tray within the cassette (21) and are arranged to be selectively positioned within the device for propulsion through a releasably mounted cannula (13) at a high speed into the tissue to be sampled. Each stylet (22) includes a groove adjacent its distal end into which the tissue to be sampled enters when the cannula is propelled into the tissue. Thereafter and in automatic response to the propulsion of the stylet (22) through the cannula (13) into the tissue, the cannula (13) is propelled over the stylet (22) to excise the tissue within the stylet's recess. The propulsion of the stylets (22) and cannula (13) is so rapid that the tissue sampling procedure is virtually pain free. An indicator (14) is provided so that the operator will know the number of samples taken. The cassette (21) is removable from the device (10) and can be filled with the fixative solution or taken to a laboratory for analysis of the tissue samples, all the while protecting the tissue samples and the personnel handling them.

L'invention concerne un appareil automatique pour biopsies (10) permettant de prélever des échantillons tissulaires multiples chez un patient. L'appareil, actionné pneumatiquement en réponse à un dispositif de commande (20) actionné par l'opérateur, utilise une cassette que l'on peut enlever et qui contient une pluralité de stylets (22). Ceux-ci, placés sur un plateau mobile à l'intérieur de la cassette (21), sont sélectivement positionnés à l'intérieur de l'appareil de façon à être propulsés à grande vitesse dans le tissu à échantillonner au travers d'une canule (13) montéee amovible. Chaque stylet (22) comporte une rainure adjacente à son extrémité distale, dans laquelle pénètre le tissu à échantilloner quand la canule est propulsée à l'intérieur de celui-ci. Dès que le stylet (22) sort de la canule (13) pour être propulsée dans le tissu, la canule est automatiquement propulsée par dessus le stylet (22) de façon à couper le tissu qui se trouve dans l'encoche de ce dernier. La propulsion des stylets (22) et de la canule (13) est tellement rapide que le prélèvement des échantillons est pratiquement indolore. Un indicateur (14) permet à l'opérateur de connaître le nombre d'échantillons prélevés. On peut sortir la cassette (21) du dispositif (10) pour la remplir d'une solution de fixatif ou l'apporter au laboratoire pour faire analyser les échantillons tissulaires, la cassette protégeant ces derniers aussi bien que le personnel qui les manie.
