An automatic breadmaker (10) has an oven chamber (19) for baking bread. The chamber (19) is formed by a floor (11) and wall members, including top, rear and side wall members (29, 31, 33). The breadmaker (10) also has a pan (27) in the oven chamber (19) for containing a bread product (37). A lamp (47) is secured to the top wall member (29), whereby light is directed downwardly to illuminate the bread product (37) during baking. Preferably, the lamp (47) is over the pan (27) and the breadmaker (10) includes a barrier (57) interposed between the lamp (47) and the region (35) from which a user views the contents of the pan (27). Unreflected light from the lamp (47) is thereby substantially prevented from entering the viewing region (35) and impairing the user's view of the bread product (37).
