A method for use in upgrading a resource of a computer from an existing version of the resource to a later version of the resource. The method includes the steps of (a) digitally storing upgrade information which identifies the later version and describes features of the later version relative to one or more earlier versions of the resource, (b) digitally storing in the computer information identifying the existing version, by computer, automatically determining which of the earlier versions is the existing version, and (c) based on the results of the comparing step, automatically determining, or displaying to a user at least some of the upgrade information to aid the user in determining, whether to perform an upgrade. The upgrade information may be stored on a portable medium along with copies of the resources and the upgrade information may include instructions, in accordance with a predefined common syntax, for installing each of the resources.

L'invention est une méthode servant à mettre à jour une ressource utilisée par un ordinateur et à remplacer la version du moment de cette ressource par une nouvelle version. Cette méthode comprend les opérations suivantes : a) stockage numérique de l'information de mise à jour qui identifie la nouvelle version et décrit les caractéristiques de cette dernière par rapport à une ou à plusieurs versions antérieures de la ressource en question, b) stockage numérique dans l'ordinateur et par l'ordinateur d'une information identifiant la version existante avec détermination automatique de celle des versions antérieures qui est la version existante, et c), d'après les résultats de cette comparaison, détermination automatique ou affichage à l'intention de l'utilisateur d'une partie au moins de l'information de mise à jour pour aider celui-ci à déterminer si la mise à jour doit être effectuée. L'information de mise à jour peut être stockée sur un support portatif avec des copies des ressources et peut comprendre des instructions d'installation de chacune des ressources, ces instructions étant établies selon une syntaxe commune prédéfinie.
