Abstract of the Disclosure An automatic deposit receiving and handling machine is disclosed. It includes a tray which is normally inaccessible by a depositor but which becomes accessible when a genuine card presented by the depositor is read and recognized by a card reader in the machine. The depositor can then place all the bills he wishes to deposit on the tray. The bills are then removed one by one automatically from the tray, checked and counted and the total is displayed. If the depositor agrees with the total he can permit acceptance by the machine. In a preferred embodiment, the tray may be rendered inaccessible during the counting and checking procedure.
