ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE A device, for example in a coal washbox, for controlling conditions in the washbox wherein the washing liquid is caused to oscillate vertically therein, the device comprising a float disposed in the liquid thus to oscillate therewith at a mean level determined by the conditions prevailing in the washbox, actuating means responsive to the position of the float and adapted to actuate further means for controlling said conditions, and a reduction gear assembly drivingly connecting the float to said actuating means, the arrangment being such that when the mean level of oscillation of the float rises, the actuating means is simultaneously raised by the float, and when said mean level falls the actuating means is simultaneously lowered by the reduction gear assembly at a predeter- mined reduced rate with respect to the rate of fall of said level. - 1 -
