The invention enables the automatic addition of new data to a database by means of a communications line. Communication is periodically established with a center equipped with a memory device and on occasions when it is found that there is new data in the center memory device, space is secured in the terminal memory device for storage of the new data. At the same time the new data is read out of the center memory device and stored in the terminal memory device. In order to secure the requisite data storage space, data which is only infrequently accessed may be deleted from the terminal memory.
