ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An automatic dry cleaning machine and method is shown for cleaning clothes in the presence of a highly volatile solvent without undue loss of solvent vapors. The machine has a rotatable clothes containing tub which is common to both a solvent circulating system, operative primarily during the wash portion of the cleaning cycle, and an air circulating system, operative primarily during the dry portion of the cleaning cycle. Each system includes electrically actuated valves controlled through a timer for generally isolating each system form the cloths tub during those portion of the cycle the respective system is not being used to specifically circulate a fluid through the tub. Further, during periods when the machine is not being used all values are closed to isolate the tub from any substantial source of solvent vapors to reduce vapor accumulation in the tub that could be lost when the access to the tub is opened. Also, except for a pressure relief line from the storage tank of the solvent system to the vapor condenser of the air system and a return condensate line, the two systems are maintained substantially isolated from each other to minimize solvent vaporization. Also, to prevent the escape of vapors without undue pressure build-up, the air system includes an expandable bag interposed between the tub and one of the closed valves in the air system. The stored vapors are subsequently reintroduced to the air system and condensed for return to the tank. The valves in the air system, in addition to their function of isolating the air system also prevent air flow during centrifuging operations to eliminate unwanted selective premature drying of the clothes.
