Abstract of the Disclosure Disclosed is a filter press comprising a substantially cylindrical vessel, a plurality of filter elements disposed in the vessel parallel to one another, and a rotor having a rotor shaft rotatably mounted in the vessel and a plural- ity of rotor elements fixedly connected to the rotor shaft and extending each between two adjacent filter elements, the surfaces of the rotor elements being adapted to be forced towards the filter elements for mechanically compressing filter cakes accumulated thereon, wherein the axis of the vessel is disposed in an upright position, the filter elements and rotor elements being formed as cylinddrical wall members disposed in concentric relationship to one another with the rotor elements extending into the spaces between adjacent filter elements and being secured to a mounting structure connected to the rotor shaft, while the filter elements are supported on a carrier grid in the vessel. The lower ends of the rotor elements can be lowered to an advanced position in which they close the lower end of the sludge space between the respective rotor element and the associated filter element. In this position the filter press can be operated to expand press diaphragms secured on the rotor elements for mechanically compressing and squeezing the filter cakes accumulated on the filter elements. In the retracted or raised position, the lower ends of the rotor elements define respective passages between themselves and the lower ends of the filter elements for permitting the compressed filter cakes to be discharged therethrough by means of scrapers secured to the radial mounting structure. The invention enables a greater filter surface area to be accommodated in a vessel of a given volume as compared to the capacity of a rotor filter press with disc-shaped filter and rotor elements.
