ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An automatic level control (ALC) circuit is used with a light beam scanning apparatus to inspect printed circuit boards containing a pattern of conducting surfaces on an insulating substrate. Light interaction with the conductors produces a first set of signals called conductor signals while light interaction with the substrate produces a second set of signals called substrate signals. A first corrected reference signal corresponding to the conductor signals is generated and provided to a summing circuit where it is summed with conductor and substrate signals from the scanning apparatus. When the first reference signal is summed with conductor signals a near zero level summed conductor signal is produced. Substrate signals added to the fixed level first reference signal produce summed substrate signals with a non-zero value. Sub- sequently a second corrected reference signal is generated. Thereafter, both summed conductor and summed substrate signals are provided to the multiplier circuit along with the second corrected reference signal. The adjusted sub- strate signals will have a signal level nearly equal to the preselected signal value for all printed circuit boards which undergo inspection. The adjusted conductor signals will have a near zero signal level for all printed circuit boards undergoing inspection. In this manner, the ALC circuitry provides uni- form adjusted substrate and adjusted conductor signals for all printed circuit boards undergoing inspection.
