ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An automatic polishing machine in which a slide base is threadably engaged with a rotating shaft which is supported by a stationary frame in such a way that the slide base is movable toward or away from a surface of a workpiece such as an automotive body, in a direction perpendicular to the surface. A photoelectric detector is provided which is adapted to detect the distance between a rotary abrasive element and the surface to be polished or coated and to control the direction of rotation of a reversible motor in response to the output signal from the photoelectric detector representing an increase or decrease in distance between the surface to be polished or coated and the rotary abrasive means so that the rotary abrasive means can be pressed against the surface to be polished under a predetermined pressure depending upon the contour of the surface to be polished or coated.
