Abstract A device for automatically handling a number of samples. Basic components of the device include a sample holder, a vacuum means, and a transfer means. During each cycle in a typical sampling operation, the vacuum means moves one or more of the samples to a receptacle designed for receiving them. Before the samples are moved out of the sample holder, the transfer means removes a cover and any protective hoods or insulating sleeves from the receptacle, and then replaces these components after the samples have been placed in the receptacle.
