Abstract of the invention An automatic trailer hitch for use with a draft vehicle is disclosed. This hitch contains devices for attaching its two ends to a trailer and to a vehicle for towing the trailer. When the hitch is being connected to the vehicles, it may be extended in length; the presence of at least two telescoping members in the hitch allows such extension. Once the hitch has been connected to the vehicles, the towing vehicle may be backed towards the draft vehicle, thereby contracting the length of the hitch. A locking mechanism, comprised of a spring-loaded pawl, locks the hitch into its contracted position once it has reached a certain specified minimum length. 18
