ABSTRACT An automotive transmission having a planetary gear set with friction clutches and brakes controlling the gear sets to obtain four forward speed ratios and a single reverse speed ratio. The transmission includes an output gear mounted between the planetary gear set and the main input clutch to the gear set while another input clutch is provided on the other side of the planetary gear set from the output gear. The planetary gear set has a pair of input sun gear elements, an input carrier element, an output carrier element, and a pair of ring gear elements. The output carrier element is connected to the output gear, and two of the elements include reaction elements for the gear set. One of the clutches is engageable to connect the input shaft to the sun gears, and the other clutch mechanism is engageable to connect the input shaft to the input carrier element. In the arrangement, the main clutch can have substantially larger friction face area allowing for increased torque capacity and an open space around the clutch allows for superior cooling characteristics and less restricted flow path.
