ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION An automatic transmission that includes a first rotating assembly that is coupled by a bias member to a second rotating assembly and the second rotating assembly will vary the effective diameter of movable sprocket wheel assemblies thereof responsive to a torque applied to the transmission. The bias member is a spring connected to bias, the first and second rotating assemblies to a first relative position. As a torque is applied and increased, the bias tension is overcome and relative rotation of the first and second assemblies occurs. The individual sprocket wheels of the sprocket wheel assemblies thereby travel toward a second relative position, changing the transmission effective diameter.
