An automatic vehicle washer (10) of the present invention is adapted to sense the shape of the vehicle to be washed and selectively control a tall brush(12) in response to the shape, height, or type of the vehicle. When a portion ofthe vehicle having only a low profile is being washed, the upper portion (12A) of the brush (12) can be disengaged while the lower portion (12B) of the brush (12) can continue rotating. The shape of the vehicle is preferably determined by use of an ultrasonic sensor (34).
