ABSTRACT An automatically braking means for hoisting apparatuses of the type comprising a reversible and rotatable shaft, a cable drum connected to said shaft and arranged to rotate with said shaft, and a spring connected to said shaft to be biased when said shaft rotates in one direction during withdrawal of the cable from said drum for subsequently providing rotation of said shaft and drum in the opposite direction for rewinding of the cable on the drum. The brake means comprises an inertia-controlled brake disk turnably mounted on said shaft and axially displaceable on said shaft for braking said shaft and drum. The brake, disk is arranged for displacement from a neutral position to a locking position, when said brake disk is turned relative to said shaft due to rapid rotation of said shaft in the rewinding direction, and a spring is arranged for returning said brake disk to the neutral position for renewed withdrawal of the cable.
