ABSTRACT From a human factors standpoint, it is desirable to condi- tion the typewriter to respond to the speed at which a keyboard operator operates the keys to avoid unduly delaying the operator but, at the same time, obviating erroneous multiple printing of characters for slow typists. The electronics which control the keyboard and processor of a word processing system may time the period for which a standard key or a datum key is depressed during normal cycles. If, for example, the space bar is depressed for longer than a predetermined time period such as 100 milli- seconds but less than 300 milliseconds, then the delay time before the control logic indicates a repetitive printing will then be extended. If, for example, the minimum delay time initially set with the power on of the word processing system is 300 milliseconds, then the holding of the space bar for a period of time between 100 and 300 milliseconds will result in the system operating to extend the minimum delay time to 400 milliseconds to accommodate a slow typist. This sequence may be continued until such time as a space bar depression time greater than 200 milliseconds but less than 400 milliseconds are detected. If such a time period is detected, then the 400 millisecond typamatic delay time will then be increased to 500 milliseconds to accommodate the very slow typist. This cycle may be repeated as desired to increase the 500 millisecond delay time to 600 milliseconds. The time period will then remain at 600 milliseconds until the typewriter or word processing system is turned off and then restarted at a later time. At the later time, the 300 millisecond standard delay time will then be reinitiated.
