ABSTRACT This invention describes an apparatus for measuring the rate of flow of a liquid through a pipe in a vacuum-liquid delivery system in which a first bounded volume for carrying the liquid has an inlet and an outlet and a suction is applied to the outlet. A first pair of electrical contacts interior to the first bounded volume are located in a position where they can be splashed by the liquid as it passes through the bounded volume, thereby causing a varying impedance across the contacts. A second bounded volume having an inlet and an outlet has its outlet connected to the outlet of the first bounded volume. A second pair of electrical contacts interior to the second bounded volume, are located therein to be contacted by the liquid when it reaches a predetermined level in the second bounded volume. A processing means is electrically connected to the first and second electrical contacts for statistically estimating the flowrate based on the varying impedance across the first pair of electrical contacts and then using the measured flowrate determined from the signal from the second pair of electrical contacts to calibrate the estimated flowrate.
