A financial instrument such as check contains a transaction record in human-readable form which is digitally signed, error checking characters corresponding to the characters of the transaction record, and error recovery characters corresponding to both the record characters and the error checking characters. An image of the financial instrument is delivered by facsimile transmission to a service center for depositing, certification, authentication or registration. The image is subjected to optical character recognition, and an error calculation is performed using the error checking characters to detect recognition errors. In response to a recognition error, the error recovery characters are used to reconstruct the instrument data. The various characters in the instrument are arranged in error-handling coding blocks whose members are distributed to accommodate common problems associated with facsimile transmission and poor paper handling practices. Authentication involves verification of the digital signature to verify the source of the instrument and absence of alterations. To allow detection of digital impersonation, all financial instruments from a particular source contain transaction codes that reflect the issuing sequence of the instruments and contain random elements that cannot be predicted.
