ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An automation system for cutting segments from a strip of film wound on a reel, mounting the segments in reusable fixtures and stacking the fixtures in a magazine. The film strip from the reel is advanced by a film stepping mechanism one segment at a time through a film guide. At a first position in the film guide a coding subsystem applies digital data to each segment. The film strip is then advanced until a segment is located at a second prede- termined position with respect to the film guide within a loading subsystem which loading subsystem during each cycle of its operation severs a segment, one at a time, from the film strip and loads each severed segment into a reusable fixture. A transferor magazine has a plurality of reusable fixtures positioned in the magazine which fixtures are extracted or removed, from the magazine one at a time by a fixture actuator and inserted into a fixture guide. When a fixture occupies a first predetermined position within the fixture guide, a segment ejector removes any segment that may have been pre- viously mounted in the fixture. The fixture is then advanced until it is positioned in the loading system so that the loading subsystem can mount a severed segment on the fixture during each cycle of operation of the loading subsystem. After a segment has been mounted on the fixture, the fixture is moved by a second fixture actuator into a second fixture guide and is advanced until the fixture is in a first predetermined position in the second fixture guide where a secondary seating device applies force to the attachment webs of the segment on the fixture to increase the probability that each segment is securely mounted on its fixture. Subsequently, each fixture with its segment is stacked in a transferee magazine which is aligned with the second fixture guide so that the fixtures are stacked sequentially into the transferee maga- zine by the second fixture actuator.
