Abstract An automobile air conditioner comprises a generally elongated casing having air intake and outlet grilles on its opposite sides. A generally elongated evaporator is mounted in the casing to extend generally in the longitudinal direction of the casing and positioned adjacent the air intake grille. At least one cross-flow fan is mounted in the casing to extend generally in the longitudinal direction of the casing, being positioned between the evaporator and the air outlet grille. A drive unit drives the cross-flow fan from top to bottom as viewed from the air outlet grille. The evaporator is supported in the casing in a tilted orientation with its upper edge inclined close towards the cross-flow fan. The casing is elongated and shallow, and is curved to conform to the curvature of the ceiling of the passenger compartment of the automobile to which it is fixed. The arrangement is more compact than previous constructions, and provides a uniform supply of cooled air throughout such compartment.
