ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus for and method of making an automobile sound insulat- ing panel are provided herein. The method is an improvement in a method of making a sound insulating panel for an automobile and comprising the steps of, forming a contoured fibrous pad, coating the pad with a liquid plastisol layer, and curing the plastisol layer. The improvement resides in a coating step which comprises the steps of continuously moving the pad on a conveyor having openings therein, disposing an open top elongate trough vertically above the conveyor and pad, and flowing en- tirely by gravity a solid curtain of liquid foamed plastisol from the trough against at least one surface of the pad while continuously moving the pad thereunder, the curtain extending across one full dimension of the pad while moving the pad at a constant speed through the curtain. Upon curing, the automobile sound insulating panel is provided in which the plastisol layer is bonded against the pad. The plastisol layer com- prises a foamed plastisol layer having randomly disposed air pockets therethrough. Such pockets serve to reduce the overall weight of the panel while improving the acoustical properties thereof.
