An auxiliary power system (7) for a vehicle (1), having an auxiliary internal combustion engine (8) with a starter (34); an auxiliary alternator (9) driven by the auxiliary engine (8) and connected to a battery (6) of the vehicle; and a control unit (41), which is connected to the battery, and activates the starter (34) of the auxiliary engine (8) in the event the voltage of the battery (6) is below a reference value.
