An auxiliary insert is for use with a cover member at the open terminal end of a vent pipe. The vent pipe defines a longitudinal axis. The auxiliary insert comprises an insert portion for engagement into the open terminal end of a vent pipe. A grate is operatively mounted on the insert portion to at least partially occlude passage of objects into an open terminal end of a vent pipe, when the auxiliary insert is engaged in the open terminal end of a vent pipe. -27-
