A starting and operating device for controlling the auxiliairy lamp which is used in H.I.D. fixtures such as H.I.D. fixtures for high pressure sodium (H.P.S.), metal halide (M.H.) and mercury vapor (M.V.), AC power voltage being provided to the transformer/ballast, capacitor and/or starter of such H.I.D. lamp (H.P.S. - M.H. - M.V.) and to the H.I.D. lamp (H.P.S. - M.H. - M.V.) by means of a power supply transformer/ballast having its secondary winding connected to its related, capacitor and/or starter, to the H.I.D. lamp (H.P.S. - M.H. - M.V.), to the starring device and to the auxiliary lamp (Quartz or Iodine) and such transformer/ballast having its primary winding connected to an AC power source. The starting and operating device is connected to the secondary winding of the transformer/ballast as well as to the H.I.D. lamp and to an AC power source to control the stating and operating time of that auxiliairy lamp so after passage of a certain amount of time that is measured from the growing luminosity of the H.I.D. lamp (H.P.S. - M.H. - M.V.) while its starting, the device will disable the auxiliary lamp whenever the H.I.D. lamp (H.P.S. - M.H. - M.V.) has reached a sufficient level of luminosity. The device also controls the starting and operating of the auxiliairy lamp if a malfunction occurs to the H.I.D. lamp (H.P.S. - M.H. - M.V.) or during a power cut-off, if an AC emergency power supply is available.
