ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An auxiliary light source for a passive focus detector, such as would be used for automatic focusing. A projection lens is inclined with respect to the imaging lens and projects a patterned image from a surface inclined with respect to the projection lens. preferably the patterned image is projected to lie along the axis of the imaging lens so that a sharp illumination pattern is formed at all distances along that axis. Preferably the pattern is such that a higher intensity portion is imaged at a far distance and a lower intensity portion is imaged at a near distance.
