An auxiliary seat assembly to be releasably mounted to the aft end of a smowmobile. The seat assembly comprises a pair of elongated brackets, each adapted to be anchored to the rear of corresponding lateral side portions of the snowmobile main frame, and defining an elongated fore and aft channel opening into a front cavity at the front end of the bracket. A rigid generally U-shape seat frame is provided, defining a web and two transverse elongated side legs. The web defines a generally flat outer face and an opposite inner face, with the web inner face being of an irregular shape adapted to be complementary to at least part of the raised rear end section of the snowmobile main bench. Each bottom side leg defines an inner end, merging with the web, and an outer free end portion. Each side leg outer end portion defines front and rear edge portions. A finger projects from each side leg front edge portion, the side leg outer end portion releasably engaging into a corresponding bracket channel in an operative position of the auxiliary seat, with the corresponding finger wedgingly engaging into the bracket cavity. Set screws releasably anchor each side leg rear edge portion to the bracket member, when the side leg outer end portion is an operative position inside the bracket channel. The web inner face is adapted to abut against the complementary portion of the beach raised rear section.
