A photodetector circuit comprising an avalanche photodiode having a signal input for receiving an input optical signal to be converted to an electrical signal. The photodetector circuit further includes biasing circuitry, coupled to the avalanche photodiode, for applying a bias voltage to the avalanche diode. The bias circuitry includes: (1) a dc bias circuit for providing a dc component to the bias voltage for maintaining the avalanche diode in a stable avalanche gain condition when receiving the input optical signal; and (2) a modulating circuit for providing a high frequency modulating component to the bias voltage for modulating the bias voltage in a manner that enhances the operational characteristics of the avalanche photodiode. In particular, the modulating component to the bias voltage decreases the noise of the signal output of the avalanche photodiode for a given average gain, and increases the bandwidth of the signal output of the avalanche photodiode for a given average gain.
L'invention concerne un circuit photodétecteur comprenant une photodiode à avalanche pourvue d'une entrée de signaux destinée à recevoir un signal optique d'entrée à convertir en un signal électrique. Le circuit photodétecteur comprend également un circuit de polarisation, couplé à la photodiode à avalanche, et destiné à appliquer une tension de polarisation à celle-ci. Ce circuit de polarisation comprend: (1) un circuit de polarisation à courant continu délivrant une composante de courant continu à la tension de polarisation afin de maintenir la diode à avalanche dans un état de gain à avalanche stable lors de la réception du signal optique; et (2) un circuit de modulation délivrant une composante de modulation haute fréquence à la tension de polarisation afin de moduler cette dernière et améliorer les caractéristiques fonctionnelles de la photodiode à avalanche. Notamment, la composante de modulation délivrée à la tension de polarisation réduit le bruit de la sortie des signaux de la photodiode à avalanche pour un gain à avalanche donné, et augmente la largeur de bande de la sortie des signaux de la photodiode à avalanche pour un gain moyen donné.
