Abstract of the Disclosure AXIAL COUPLING OF ARC LAMP TO LIGHT PIPE A light delivery system includes an arc lamp, an optical waveguide for transmitting light from the arc lamp to a desired location, and an optical coupler for coupling light emitted by the arc lamp along its longitudinal axis to an input end of the optical waveguide. The light emitted by the arc lamp along its longitudinal axis has high brightness. As a result, light from the arc lamp is efficiently coupled into the optical waveguide and high intensity light is transmitted through the optical waveguide. In a preferred embodiment, the arc lamp is an electrodeless arc lamp which is energized by microwave energy. The optical waveguide can be a glass or polymer light pipe, an optical fiber or an optical fiber bundle.
