ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to improved methods and apparatus for separating or fractionating liquid suspensions by means of hydrocyclones and in particular relates to elutriation apparatus and methods for enabling the recovery of acceptable fractions of the suspension which would otherwise be lost through the hydrocyclone reject. The invention includes the use of an elutriator comprising a housing adapted to be connected to the reject end of the hydrocyclone and the housing having an elongated conduit connected thereto and adapted to extend axially into the reject passage of the hydrocyclone to beyond the plane of no return and in radially spaced relation to the wall of the reject passage. The conduit is provided with a closed free end portion which is of a diameter sufficient as to substantially block move- ment of the air core along the axis of the hydrocyclone and into the reject passage during operation. This conduit is provided with openings therealong for emitting elutriation liquid in a swirling fashion around such conduit on both sides of the plane of no return. The housing includes a chamber connected to the end of the conduit opposite the free end and communicating with the interior of the conduit for supplying elutriating liquid to the above-noted openings.
