An axial fan construction wherein individual blade assemblies (13) are secured within apertures (18) in the fan hub (12). Fasteners (25) extend between a retaining member (23) and a blade base (15), with each blade base including a shoulder (27) overlying a bearing surface on the hub (19) and with resilient members (22) positioned between the blade base shoulders (27) and hub bearing surfaces (19). A spacer (21) maintains the blade base shoulders and retaining members a preselected distance apart to allow prestressing of the fasteners (25) while limiting the compressive force applied to the resilient member (22). The blade base shoulders (27) and hub bearing surfaces (19) are configured to cooperate with the resilient member (22) to impart a centering force on the blade base (15) relative to a hub aperture (18) when the resilient member (22) is compressed between the blade shoulder (27) and hub bearing surface (19).
