A piston rod (12), having a threaded end (14), is threadedly received in a split collar (20) which is internally threaded and externally tapered. The collar (20) is received in a tapered bore (18) formed in a crosshead (16). 'The crosshead (16) has a plurality of threaded holes (28) formed therein to receive studs (32) penetrate a pressure plate (24). Nuts (34) secured to ends of the studs (32) draw the plate (24) against the collar (20) to cause its threads to fully engage the threads of the rod end (14), and secure the collar (20) in place. The rod (12), of course, can be turned in the collar (20), threadedly to adjust its axial positioning in the collar (20).
